Stunning 4x100 free lead-off leg from the new Aussie kid on the block, James Magnussen. There’s been a fair bit of hype around this youngster and today he made good on it: 47.49 lead off. That’s an ASTOUNDING time, and helped the Aussies hold off France and the USA, though Fabien Gilot’s 47.22 nearly caught up Eamon Sullivan on the last leg. So the French get yet ANOTHER silver (lol etc) and Phelps (above) had to settle for bronze.
Some time comparisons:
- Magnussen’s previous best time this year was a 48.29
- Pieter van den Hoogenband’s previous textile record (from the Sydney Olympics) was 47.84
- Cesar Cielo’s shiny-suit WR is 46.91.
- Eamon Sullivan’s Australian (shiny) record is 47.05.
